Canterbury Poodle 2023 Year in Review

2023 was a busy year for Canterbury Poodles, we did not have any litters born but boy did we have a lot of the babies being shown.

It was a record year for us as we had 10 of our poodles hit the show ring, with 6 Canterbury Poodles earning their Ch Title.

Achievements

Mini Poodles:

Am/Can MBISS GChS Dassin Vivica of Canterbury – First Female Mini poodle in Canada to earn the Silver title.  Ended the year as Canadas #2 mini Poodle and #1 Female Mini for the second time.    Has been in the top 5 for the past 3 years.   Vivica has now been shaved down and will be taking a break from the show ring.  Might make her way out as veteran in a few years time.   

NEW CHAMPION!

 Canterbury Signet Warrior Princess @ Heritage, earned her Canadian title and won the variety at the Poodle Club of Ontario all as puppy.

NEW CHAMPION! 

Ch Canterbury Signet Drama Queen @ Heritage, another puppy Champion with group placements along the way.

Canterbury Jay’R  – sold as a pet however in 2 weekends of showing earned 5 points, a group placement and Best Puppy in Variety Specialty.  

Ch Canterbury Midnight Kiki – Earned a few of her American Champion points and is currently taking a break for 2024 to have a litter.  Will be out in 2025 

Standard Poodles:

GCh Canterbury Hillwood Hannelore, finished her championship in style has a puppy winning best of winners at the Ottawa Valley Poodle club and best puppy in  breed specialty.

Canterbury Hillwood Bodacious, sold as a pet but was shown 2 weekends and picked up 6 points, including going WD at the Poodle Club of Ottawa Specialty. 

What a great 2022 PCA with Rosalynda being found in such a beautiful line up and for Vivica showing like a star. Thank you Handler Ally Hardie for presenting her so beautifully.

Wow what a week, so proud to announce that Vivica is now known as MBIS GCH Dassin Vivica of Canterbury. Thank you to judges Allan Pepper, Heather Langfield, and Mark Houston-McMillan for awarding Vivica with BISS. It was a windy and rainy day but that did not prevent Handler Jennifer Watson from presenting her beautifully.

Canterbury poodles is thrilled to announce our new grand champion, GCH Dassin Vivica of Canterbury. Her first week back in the ring and sporting her continental trim, she placed in the group 5 of the 6 days of the Champlain show. I can’t thank her handler Jennifer Watson enough for her expert handling and care. We are looking forward to what the future holds for this young special.

Very proud to introduce Vicica as now being called Ch.Dassin Vivica of Canterbury. In my history page it speaks to how “It Takes A Village”. This could not be truer when it comes to Vivica. I need to thank Breeder Joseph Vergnetti and the team at Dassin Farms, who took such great care raising her for the months that it took to figure out logistics of cross boarder import. It was handler Kim Wendling that connected me with broker Jessica Alexandra. Jessica was able to quickly get the ball rolling by gathering paper work, submitting it and finally meeting Joseph at the Canfield show to pick her up. If it was not for Jessica and the work she does, I may not have this fun, playful and beautiful puppy who stole our hearts so quickly. I have the talented people at ShowScene who compiled and created such lovely ads that made me so proud. And of course I can’t forget Handler Jennifer Watson who expertly cared and showed Vivica to her championship in 3 weeks of shows and to Terry Bernier who jumped in on the last day of Wildwood and put the final point on our Girl.

Now that Vivica completed her championship as a junior puppy, she will be coming home to grow up and to grow hair. Plan to see lots more of this beautiful dog as shows start to open up.

In the comment section below, please share stories of your Championship titles that were earned during Covid…it sure was not always easy to navigate through some of the barriers and roadblocks.

Past 7 months have been a challenging time for the world and has created some divides on how the world safety should be maintained. As world leaders continue to struggle with the daily tough decisions that’s aim is to limit the spread of covid.

We in the K9 community, have faced our own challenges. The dogs we have that are to be shown have a small window to get the socializing they need. With shops, parks and gatherings restricted, so are the opportunities to get our furry friends ready for the world.

There have been limited shows this year, and those hosting the shows have been resilient in adapting to the changing bylaws, some of these changes have taken place mid shows. The community has pulled together to ensure that our love for the sport can continue. Limitations, restrictions and protocols that keep us all safe are welcomed. We are in new times, and we are understanding.

I have seen judges being overly patient with young dogs, taking the time needed to give puppies and unsure adults the time they need to get comfortable. Extra go overs, extra time on the go around and additional time being spent on the table – this ties to a previous post “It takes a village”

I am excited and a bit nervous as I sit here about to start my first Blog. I can’t think of any other topic that excites and inspires me as the wonderful world of show dogs.

Let me first start by introducing myself, I am Kevin and a true lover of animals and the bonds that our K9 companions form with us. As much as I have been in and out of the sport over the past 25 years, the dogs that I have had has played in important part of my life and have been part of my family. I have experienced the joys and heartache that some times come with breeding, the highs that come from having a dog that is truly competitive and have navigated through dogs who maybe needed a bit more time to find themselves.

I dont come from a dog Show family, but independently discovered the joys that come with our sport. More of who I have to thank for welcoming in to the sport can be found in the History portion of www.minipoodle.ca.

I have been through the struggles of leaning hair care, have been in the ring as an owner handler and also the owner who impatiently waits at home for a handler to send an update.

Well World, welcome in to my home and I look forward to sharing my K9 stories with like minded individuals.
